President-nominee’s Acceptance Remarks to RI Convention
John Kenny, 2009-10 RI President
Los Angeles
18 June 2008

I am very conscious of the honor that has been bestowed upon me to be president of Rotary International for 2009-10. It is also humbling. My wife, June, and I would like to express our gratitude for the messages of support and encouragement which we have received.
We have come from a small country of five million people with three Rotary districts, and it is, therefore, a special honor to be the first Rotarian from Scotland to be president in the history of Rotary (and only the fifth from the British Isles). Scotland has, however, been at the heart of the organization since Rotary’s earliest days. Our founder Paul Harris’ wife, Jean, was Scottish. She lived in Edinburgh, in my district. The area of Edinburgh was known as Comely Bank and that is why Paul Harris named his house in Chicago “Comely Bank.” There is another early connection with my district in that the first Rotary convention held outside North America was held in Edinburgh in 1921 when, for the first time, home hospitality was offered to delegates attending.
I am conscious of the tradition of Rotary and that I am following in the footsteps of illustrious predecessors in the office of president, and I shall endeavor to uphold the dignity of the office to the best of my ability. I believe that high ethical standards in our business and private life are as important today as they were in the early days of Rotary. To you, President Wilf and President-elect D.K., I give my thanks for the support I have received. Presidents may change, but the office of presidency remains constant and steadfast.
I am here today because someone invited me to become a member of the Rotary Club of Grangemouth, a club whose membership I have enjoyed for 37 years. As I am a lawyer in the town, most of the members were already business associates but became personal friends. Indeed, one of the things I shall miss these next two years is attending the meetings of my club each Thursday at lunchtime.
Communications may make our world seem a smaller place, but there are still too many who are vulnerable, homeless, starving, even without hope. With your help and dedication, I am sure we can try to help alleviate their plight. Do not let us fail to try.
In conclusion, June and I value the trust you have placed in us and which we shall seek to justify. Thank you.
